Extended borrowing for Short Loan material over Christmas

Students may borrow the Short Loan material for an extended loan over the Christmas period. If there is a book you need from the Short Loan collection you may borrow it from 11.30am on Monday December 19th and keep it until 3pm on Tuesday January 3rd.

Library extends opening hours for final 4 weeks of semester 1

The library will open for an extra hour every weekday for the peak period of Semester 1. Beginning next Monday, Nov 21st and running up to the end of the exams the library will open at 8am and close at 11.30pm (Mon – Fri). The weekend opening hours will remain the same.

At this time of year you may be too busy to leave your computer to come and ask your question at the library's information desks. To facilitate access to expert help with library queries the library uses Ask Us, an online question form where UL students and staff are invited to submit their library queries for the immediate attention of an Information Services librarian.

The Ask Us form is here, no registration required, just submit your name, email address and question and someone will get back to you.

So whether you need help locating something for an assignment or need some help with referencing use the Ask Us service or any of the other methods of contacting the library.

Library extension postponed

Late last week we were notified that the library extension project has been postponed. This was a PPP process and was at planning stage. The next step would have been for Government to sign contracts for construction to begin. Government has decided that in capital projects where contracts have not been signed higher education projects will not go ahead at present.
The University will continue to work with Government to identify funding to enable the start of the construction of this essential piece of campus infrastructure as soon as possible.

Official opening of the National Dance Archive at the Glucksman Library, UL

The National Dance Archive at the Glucksman Library is the most comprehensive archive in Ireland, devoted to the collection, preservation and promotion of dance, and is accessible by all. It chronicles dance in Ireland in all its manifestations (contemporary, traditional, set dancing, ballet, social dance, urban dance, and world dance) and conveys an understanding of the different processes and practices of creating, performing and writing about dance in Ireland. The Archive helps to raise the profile of dance in Ireland and internationally and also provides a greater understanding and appreciation for how dance has developed in this country in the past, in the present day and into the future. Dance in Ireland is a valuable cultural resource.
The National Dance Archive of Ireland offers all genres of dance the opportunity to gain visibility and to be appreciated in its historicity. It also provides an important resource for research and educational purposes.
The National Dance Archive of Ireland (Cartlann Náisiúnta Damhsa na hÉireann) will be officially opened by the Minister for Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Mr Jimmy Deenihan TD on Monday, November 14th 5.30pm.

The event will take place at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick.
To celebrate the opening, short dance performances illustrating some of the material within the Archive will be given by Patricia Crosbie, Alan Foley, Catherine Foley, Mary Nunan, and Piedra-Alba Perez-Alcantara.

Refreshments will be served - all are welcome to attend.

The NDAI will be based at the Glucksman Library, University of Limerick. It was founded in late 2009, in response to proposals by Dr Catherine Foley, Founding Chair of Dance Research Forum Ireland to the Glucksman Library and jointly to the Arts Council and the Irish World Academy for the establishment of a National Dance Archive at the University of Limerick. In 2008, The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon awarded funding to Dance Research Forum Ireland for a feasibility report to be undertaken and in 2009 it provided the NDAI with initial two-year funding for the set-up phase. The Archive at the Glucksman Library works in partnership with the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, Dance Research Forum Ireland, and the Arts Council.

Time to move your RefWorks databases to EndNote Web

The university (UL) subscribes to bibliographic management software to help faculty, staff and students to create and store their own databases of references.

Following a review of the software available, the library is ceasing the subscription to RefWorks. Individuals may transfer their RefWorks databases to EndNote Web, or they may purchase their own personal RefWorks subscription.
It is very important that all databases are transferred before the end of November 2011, after which there will be no further access to the RefWorks data. Please advise students of same.

Google Books alerts

Google Books is a collection of books that Google has scanned, converted to text and stored in its digital database. I've used Google Books to look up a page or chapter of a book. I may only view the entire book online if the book is out of copyright or if the copyright owner has given permission. If not available to view in Google Books I go and look for that book in a library; at least I have some idea of its content by having looked on Google Books.
The development with Google Books is that you can now set up alerts here. This means you are notified when a new book matching your area of interest is added. This is a useful addition to Google's Alerts which you can create for news, videos and other selected content.

To set up an alert, go to Google Alerts and type in your keywords e.g., title or author surname and then choose “books” from the Type drop-down list. You can then choose how often you would like a reminder; I set mine to 'as it happens' for news but 'once a week' for books.

Amazon lights a Fire under the competition

There have been some big headlines about tablets in the media in recent months. Tablets are everywhere, everyone wants a piece of the pie. If you haven’t heard enough about tablets and ebooks and iPads and Kindles already be prepared to hear a lot more about them before the year is out.

Just 2 days ago analysts at Forrester Research predicted that Amazon's yet to be released tablet would sell for about $300. The Kindle Fire was announced yesterday and will actually sell for $199. Forrester also predicted that Amazon would sell 3 to 5 million of these tablets in Q4 2011.

This Amazon tablet is a lot different to the Kindle ebook reader that Amazon first released in 2007. Commentators expect it to rival Apple's iPad sales figures in the final quarter of this year.

Almost 10% of libraries across the US have signed up to lending ebooks for Amazon’s Kindle ebook platform – how big an advantage will this be to Amazon as they take on Apple in the content and battle?
Christmas is coming and price will definitely be a big part of the debate. Watch the competitors drop their prices - an iPad 2 currently starts at $499.

The library's Peer Advisors will run library drop-in sessions again this week.

They will take place from 2-3pm in the small training room in the library, GLO-033. They will run until Friday.
These sessions will cover things like using the library catalogue to look up items from your reading list, how to reserve or renew a book, finding journal articles and how to access the library from home. We will also be advising you on general library use and providing contact details for your faculty librarian.

We welcome you all to attend, even if it is only for five minutes to ask a question or get some help looking up material for an assignment.

Library is now displaying the First Seven Weeks Top Seven Picks

In July, the VPA, on behalf of the UL First Seven Weeks team, asked the UL community to recommend books which would form a general reading list for students as a way of encouraging their reading habit, and helping students to draw from a range of resources as they embark on their studies at UL.

The books are not intended to be compulsory reading or an additional burden on students’ time. They are a way of championing an orientation towards reading and encouraging students to focus on becoming generally more well read and informed.

The 7 most recommended titles are now on display in the library and we hope that as many of you as possible will get a chance to read them in the coming months.

There is glass everywhere!!

The installation of glass panels throughout the library is almost complete. This is both a fire safety measure and a noise reduction initiative. It also means that the worst of the noise is definitely behind us which is a relief for all concerned. We have made other significant changes in the building this summer including the relocation of the desks to just inside the entrance on the left, where Inter Library Loans used to be. We have cleared the popular reading room on the ground floor to make it a bit more inviting and we have improved the lighting in this area also.

Student peer advisors available to assist you in the library

Beginning next week the library will have 9 student peer advisors working with us to provide peer support in the library for new students. The 9 advisors are current UL students or very recent graduates so they know the systems here really well and will be delighted to assist you with any queries you've got. The peer advisors will be instantly recognisable in their bright red Ask Me t-shirts. Call in and say hi to Cathal, Colm, Tom, Grace, Erin, Margaret, Lisa, Anthony and Pa.

Desk services have been relocated in the library

As part of the Glucksman Library’s refurbishment project, library desk services have been relocated. The Information Desk and the Short Loan Collection are now located to the left of the main entrance, while self-service borrowing remains in the main foyer area. Inter library loans will operate from the Information Desk. All contact details for these areas remain the same.

The building contractors are now finishing off the installation of fire doors in the library and will soon be taking down the scaffolding. The former desk area will become a PC area and will accommodate the large training room also.

The disruption will continue for a little while and we want to thank you for your patience as we complete these improvements.

Glazing will commence soon

The glass for the atria has arrived. The contractors will install glass in all openings around the atria in the coming days. The scaffolding you see inside the popular reading room and in the information commons is to allow them to access the areas where glass panels will be fitted.

Work is moving along too in the new service area, on the left as you enter the library. As you can see from the photo here the new walls are under construction and it is beginning to take shape.

The library will be closing on Friday July 29th at 5pm, open again at 9am on Tuesday August 3rd. Hopefully we will have some photos of the new glazed-in areas next week.

Trial Access to STAT!Ref Online

University of Limerick Library has trial access to STAT!Ref Online, a cross-searchable, full text health information resource that includes evidence-based calculation tools, a medical dictionary, patient information, a 3D interactive anatomy resource and core e-titles and databases in Basic Sciences, Dentistry, General Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and much more.

Access is available until 20 August 2011

Update on library refurbishment project

The library refurbishment project is moving along steadily. The walls and floors in what used to be Inter Library Loans, staff offices and the ITD large training room (behind the partition shown in this photo) have been removed and the reconfiguration work is underway.

To their credit, the builders are working quickly and quietly but we can not guarantee that this quietness willl continue; sorry. Scaffolding will be erected in the atria next week and after that we will start to see some real changes, and perhaps an increase in noise levels, with the glazing work commencing.

Library refurbishment project; the builders have arrived

The builders have arrived and will be erecting hoarding in parts of the library this week. This is to block off the offices on the ground floor which are being knocked through. The work in this area will take about a month. The glassing off of the atria will commence in mid July. The builders aim to be finished by the end of August.

The very noisy work is scheduled for evenings and weekends but inevitably there will be some disruption during this project so we apologise again for the associated inconvenience for library users.

Refurbishment work in the library - some collections will move

Due to some refurbishment work planned for the Glucksman Library this summer some collections will move in the coming weeks. We will keep you updated via this blog and also via signage in the library. The most immediate changes are:

• the Parliamentary Papers are going to be shelved in the Garden Level
• current journals can now be found alongside earlier issues on Floors 1 and 2
• regional newspapers can now be found in the Compact Shelving area in the Garden Level

If you have specific queries relating to the location of anything in the library please just ask a member of library staff.

We apologise for the inconvenience that this refurbishment work will cause in the short term but we hope to offer you enhanced services on completion of the work.

Using Twitter to find answers

Pat O’Mahony for the RTÉ ‘Doc on One’ put together a programme last week called Twitter on Trial.

The programme put 5 experienced Twitterers and a complete Twitter novice in a studio together to help people understand how Twitter works and see whether it is useful or not.

They set a variety of Twitter tasks - simple and difficult, serious and funny, quantitative and qualitative - to see how good Twitter is at answering factual questions, organising things, getting in touch with strangers. Having used Twitter for a couple of years, I have found it to be a powerful medium for answering both personal and work-related queries. It is also a great news source and the most usual way for me to now look at news headlines, via my phone.

The Dictionary of Irish Biography is a collaborative project between Cambridge University Press and the Royal Irish Academy. It is a comprehensive and authoritative biographical dictionary published for Ireland and contains over 9,000 signed biographical articles

Shooting stars; meteor shower tonight

In the spirit of embracing the free we thought we would notify you about tonight's free astronomical 'event'.*
According to Astronomy Ireland, tonight, Monday December 13th is the best night to watch the meteor shower over Ireland. You do not need a telescope or any special equipment to view this. The Geminids (this meteor shower is named after the constellation Gemini, from which the meteors appear to come from in the sky) will appear to originate from a point in the south east but can be seen by looking anywhere in the sky from sunset this evening. Astronomy Ireland have forecast a spectacular show even in built up, well-lit areas.

Astronomy Ireland are looking for people to assist them in counting the meteors. You can be part of a huge science experiment by logging on to http://www.astronomy.ie/ and sending them the required data. Your payment for this is a copy of their final report on the meteor shower and a special download featuring the Sky Diary pages of the next issue of Astronomy & Space, free.

*To those who have yet to complete their Christmas gift shopping, use of this 'event' as a gift to a loved one may have undesired consequences. Tread carefully :-)

RFID in libraries, event at UL Tuesday November 30th at 10:30am

The Glucksman Library at the University of Limerick is hosting an event on Tues 30^th Nov to explore the whole subject of Radio-frequency identification (RFID) for Libraries. The aim of this event is to build awareness of the technology, emphasising the benefits and future potential of RFID. Practical insights from libraries that have already converted to RFID will be covered. It is also intended to have some demos and offer hands-on experience of using some RFID equipment. There will also be an opportunity to chat and ask questions of the presenters.

Roads and weather information

Along with your winter woolies, your library books and your hot drinks, here are some other resources you might find useful during the forecasted cold weather in the coming weeks.
If you have any useful weather/driving sites to share with people please comment here and we will do a summary for the blog.

Road information:

The NRA has a network of 54 weather monitoring stations and road sensors located on National Roads. These stations are part of an Ice Detection and Prediction System for the prediction and detection of ice formation on national roads during the winter months. Linked directly by modem, the meteorological information from the weather stations and road sensors is relayed to Met Eireann. The data is then used to give forecasts on ice locations on the network. The forecasts are automatically relayed to the relevant local authority and provide a valuable management tool to aid authorities with their road salting and snow ploughing programmes.

This site provides the actual readings from the road sensors as opposed to the forecasts. The information provided includes Road Surface Temperature, Air Temperature, Wind Speed, Wind Direction and the Road State i.e. whether there is ice, frost, snow, wet or whether the road has been treated.

The web-pages update automatically at 10 minutes past the hour to display the most recent readings from the road sensors usually taken on the hour.

Driving information:

The AA has a good site with winter driving tips and car maintenance checklists. Consult this site for traffic reports and driving conditions.

Win an iPad from the Ordnance Survey of Ireland

The Ordnance Survey of Ireland are running a competition to develop a web app for their MapGenie mapping service. The competition invites 3rd level students in Ireland to create an app for the OSI’s MapGenie service. Students must register their interest in this competition by December 20th 2010 – although the closing date for the actual competition is not until summer 2011. The prize is an Apple iPad.

Wikivet

Although this resource shares a name with apopular internet cousin Wikivet is a valuable online educational resource for veterinary practitioners. The content is created by students and vets and moderated by subject specialists at participating institutes in the UK. From a learning perspective the Wikiquiz that is built in to the site is very useful as it provides answers from the Wikivet site. You will need to register for an account but it could prove to be worthwhile.

New ebooks in the library

We are buying electronic books for most subject areas now; this helps with access as an ebook can, in theory, never be 'out on loan' to another user when you need it. Also, you can access ebooks from home and use them just to dip in and find something quickly when you need to.

When you do a search on the library catalogue ebooks will be identified by a little red 'e' symbol beside the title. Of course, you may search ebooks only on the catalogue, just change the default option in the ALL UL Collections drop down box to Electronic Books and run your search as usual.

Springer ebooks, trial access to 40,000 ebooks until January 2011

The library has arranged a trial of the Springer ebooks collection. This trial will run until January 2011. To access the 40,000 ebooks go to http://www.springerlink.com/– no login required, access is by UL IP address.
The Springer eBooks are available in PDF and HTML and these are reproductions of high quality Springer print book publications with the added search capabilities associated with an electronic format.
There is no DRM on Springer ebooks – you may print and download as much of a book as you need.

We need to know if you like this collection of ebooks so please send your feedback to your faculty librarian during the trial.

REAXYS chemistry database demo tomorrow (Thursday 19th) in GLO-009

UL is having Dr. Denis Reidy from Elsevier on campus tomorrow to give us some training on their chemistry database Reaxys.

Reaxys is based on the combined content of CrossFire Beilstein (Organic Chemistry), CrossFire Gmelin (Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry), and the Patent Chemistry Database (PCD). Updated periodically with data from the top Chemistry / Science journals.

CES faculty and students are invited to attend this 1 hour training session at 10:30am Thursday in the library's large training room.

Come to this session to learn how to use Reaxys effectively and provide feedback to us about your experience with this product.

Beginning your publishing career is a big deal and finding out which conferences to submit to can be a challenge. Apart from a search on Google you could consider using Academic Conference Alerts. A quick search for a subject area will return plenty of suggested conferences.

Chemspider - Google for chemists

There are hundreds of chemical structure databases and no single way to search across them.

Chemspider aggregates and indexes chemical structures and their associated information in one single location, and can be searched just as you would search Google for general information.

Just like Google, Chemspider does not own the content it searches, but it can provide you with the pointers to the information you need.

ChemSpider currently searches these sources but check back often to see if new sources have been added

Google is not broken, it just got a makeover

While using Google over the weekend I wondered if perhaps my settings had been adjusted. It was only later that I discovered that Google has had a makeover. It will take a bit of getting used to, but the search appears to work just as well as before. I will find it hardest to adjust to the fact that the "pages from Ireland" that used to sit neatly under the search box is now one of the new navigation aids on the left hand side.

FIAF International Index to Film Periodicals

Created by experts at the International Federation of Film Archives, it indexes over 300,000 articles dating back to 1972 from 300 of the world's foremost academic and popular film journals.

American Film Institute Catalog

Produced in collaboration with the American Film Institute, the American Film Institute Catalog is the premier resource for studying American motion pictures. It is the most comprehensive and detailed national filmography in the world. The Catalog includes the entire print version, which currently comprises five volumes documenting all films produced in the United States from 1892 to 1971, as well as new content and important updates for all previous records. Also included are records for the Institute's Top Ten Films for the years 2000 to 2004. The Catalog offers authoritative plot summaries and insider production notes, as well as subject and sound indexing for each film record.

New Ebsco Resources Now available

The Library now has access to Academic Search Complete and Business Source Complete through IReL. These databases are available via the library website and are also available offcampus.

Academic Search Complete is a multidisciplinary full text database, with more than 7,000 full-text periodicals, including more than 6,300 peer-reviewed journals.

Business Source Complete offers premium content of peer-reviewed, business related journals. Included as part of the comprehensive coverage offered by this database are indexing and abstracts for the most important scholarly business, dating back as far as 1886.

The library's Harvard referencing guide, Cite it Right, has been reprinted and will now be sold at the Borrower Services Desk on the ground floor of the library at a price of €2. This fee is to cover the production costs - unfortunately in the current economic climate we couldn't continue to provide the guide for free. Copies are still available for borrowing from the short loan collection and the full pdf version remains freely available on the library website.

The Glucksman Library is pleased to announce that the earliest copies of the Limerick Chronicle, the oldest surviving newspaper in the State, are now available to read online from the University of Limerick Institutional Respository (ULIR). The Limerick Chronicle of 1768 was printed and edited by John Ferrar who was a prominent bookseller and and printer in Limerick.

The digitisation process took many months to complete and was made possibly by means of the sophisticated scanning equipment in our Digitisation Unit. The printed version of the Chronicle is housed in our Special Collections Department.

Online accessibility to this unique digital resource has been welcomed by scholoars, researchers, academics, and those with a keen interest in the history and heritage of 18th century Limerick.

IReL Subscriptions 2010

The current round of IReL funding came to an end in December 2009. The IUA Librarians' Group is engaged in positive discussions with the HEA and others to secure funding for IReL for 2010 onwards but it is likely that this will be at significantly reduced levels. Due to increasing publisher costs and other factors it is necessary for some IReL resources to be cancelled even if IReL funding were to be maintained at pre-2010 levels. Arising from this, and in the first of what will probably be a number of cancellation processes, the resources listed here on the IReL website or via the following link http://www.irelibrary.ie/files/IReL_resources_cancelled_29Jan2010.xls will shortly become unavailable through IReL. These resources have been identified for cancellation because they incur the highest cost per use.

The Library regrets the cancellation of any resource. We are working with our colleagues, the HEA, university senior officers and others to maintain access to as many resources through IReL as possible. We will keep you updated as the situation evolves but in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact us with any comments or queries.

Access to IReL resources from January 2010

You will be aware that the IReL initiative has provided access to over 28,000 electronic journals over the past number of years. IReL has been a most significant facilitator for research across all academic disciplines and is widely appreciated among the research community. The IUA Librarians are working with senior University officers and the HEA to explore funding options to ensure continuity of access to IReL resources from January 2010. Most publishers have agreed to continue to provide access while we finalise budgets. However, if you do encounter any difficulty in accessing IReL resources please let us know at libinfo@ul.ie
